The Opportunity
We’re seeking a fulltime External Auditor based in Sydney to support our existing and expanding Sydney client base. For the right person, this role offers the opportunity to play a meaningful part in the long term growth of our Sydney audit presence including building a Sydney based team.
Our clients are located in the city and surrounding suburbs, with most being accessible by public transport. This role suits an experienced auditor who enjoys working autonomously while being part of a collaborative, high performing and values led audit team. Most audits involve on site fieldwork during business hours, with flexibility outside peak audit periods.
You’ll work closely with Partners and supported by a strong technical, Melbourne based team. In time, we plan to hire additional Sydney based staff to work alongside you.
Although Sydney based (working remotely or from a shared workspace), you’ll also be integrated into our established Melbourne audit team. You’ll receive ongoing technical training, leadership support and professional development, while building strong relationships with Sydney based clients.
An interest in auditing not for profit organisations is highly regarded, as this is a significant and growing part of our audit practice.
Key Responsibilities
• Deliver high quality external audit engagements across a diverse client base, including not for profit organisations.
• Plan, execute and complete audit fieldwork in accordance with professional standards and firm methodologies.
• Build strong, trusted client relationships through clear communication and practical advice.
• Identify audit risks, issues and improvement opportunities, contributing to value added outcomes.
• Collaborate closely with audit managers and partners in Melbourne to ensure consistency, quality and continuous improvement.
• Participate in firm wide training, technical updates and team initiatives.
• Over time, with strategic and operational support, contribute to building a Sydney based audit capability.
Success in this role is dependent on delivery of high quality audit delivery, strong client relationships and proactive collaboration with the broader audit team.
We’re seeking someone who is genuinely interested in industry engagement and networking and sees value in contributing to the organic growth of our Sydney audit practice.
Skills, Experience and Capabilities
• 2–6 years’ external audit experience within a public practice accounting firm
• CA qualified or actively undertaking CA.
• Strong working knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and Auditing Standards
• Experience auditing not for profit organisations, or a genuine interest in developing this expertise.
• Excellent communication and relationship building skills.
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment while remaining highly collaborative.
• Strong organisational and time management skills
• A proactive, solutions focused mindset aligned with Saward Dawson’s values.
Career Development and Progression
At Saward Dawson, we actively invest in our people and prioritise internal progression. This role offers genuine long term career opportunities within a respected and growing audit practice.
You’ll benefit from:
• Structured technical training and ongoing professional development led by our Melbourne based audit leaders.
• Regular coaching, mentoring and performance feedback
• Exposure to a diverse and purpose driven client base, including not for profit organisations.
• Opportunities to develop leadership capability, client relationship skills and sector specialisation.
• Financial support to complete your CA qualification (where applicable)
Why Join Saward Dawson?
• Be part of a highly engaged team that genuinely values people and relationships.
• Strong focus on learning, development, coaching and technical excellence.
• Supportive, approachable leaders who recognise contributions and celebrate success.
• Flexible working arrangements and a culture that supports balance and wellbeing.
• Access to modern systems, innovative technology and AI enabled audit processes.
• Opportunity to make a meaningful impact through community and charity focused initiatives.
If you’re an experienced external auditor seeking a role that offers purpose, autonomy, connection and career progression—and you value working for a firm that truly lives its values—we would love to hear from you.
