- Position: Farm based Male Mentor
- Location: Berry, NSW
- Employment Type: Casual
A Taste of Paradise Organic Farm (ATOP) is set in a peaceful valley near Berry, on the South Coast of NSW. The organisation is a Not-for-Profit charity which has been operating since 1999. Our program is based on mentoring young people, mainly at-risk or disadvantaged, in a farm environment.
ATOP operates a day program which incorporates Assisted Animal Therapy, One-on-One mentoring, and the development of Horticultural and Agricultural skills. Children aged five to twenty years are referred to ATOP's programs by Government agencies, welfare agencies as well as individuals from the community.
ATOP's programs are designed to support young people by developing relationships, increasing self-esteem and coping mechanisms, and delivering practical workplace experience, which are the steppingstones for healthier relationships and lives. Using the natural environment, both plants and animals, has provided the young people we assist with the most positive achievable outcomes as they develop these skills in a safe and nurturing environment. We employ a genuine farm-based approach, which means that the skills they learn can be transferred to real life situations.
We are looking to appoint another male mentor, to become part of our team, in response to the increasing number of young males being referred to our program. This is a casual position, which could lead to a more permanent role.
Ideally, the successful applicant will have appropriate qualifications (see below) and experience in working with young people in a mentoring role (and may experience challenging behaviours), and will also be familiar with basic agricultural practices, as the mentoring sessions are carried out in a farm environment and include the young person participating in animal care and gardening tasks. Some on the job training will also be provided.
Team members will be expected to be involved in general farm work and in the upkeep of the farm property and livestock, alongside young people. This can include fairly heavy manual labour including handling of cattle, goats and poultry and maintenance of fencing and equipment which would necessitate a reasonably high level of fitness.
Goal: To ensure that young people within ATOP's programs, are effectively supported and equipped.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
a. Engage with ATOP's various programs and networks
b. Help to identify young people who might benefit from additional support
c. Develop and implement mentoring activity support plans for identified young people to assist their growth
d. Maintain administration of files associated with young people and be competent in report writing.
e. Assist with general farm work
f. Attend training as required
Key Selection Criteria:
The successful applicant will have:
- Qualifications and experience working with young people who are disadvantaged and/or at-risk. (eg. Bachelor Degree in Social Work, Diploma or Cert 4 In Community Services, Disability etc.)]
- The ability to build relationships with young people and maintain professional caring relationships of trust.
- An awareness of the needs of young people in general.
- The ability to verbally communicate.
- Strong people and communication skills.
- Experience working in a team and the ability to work independently
- The ability to self-direct, manage time effectively, and remain properly organised.
- Evidence of current Working With Children check and giving consent for ATOP to conduct a National Police Records Check before commencing role.
Remuneration:
Remuneration will be structured using the Social and Community Services (SCHADS) award and depends on qualifications.
- Need to live within easy travel distance of Berry.
