Bedford College is a Christian Vocational College located at Glebe and Norwest.  We are seeking a suitably qualified Chaplain to work with students and staff 2 days per week during the College term periods (loosley based on public school term dates).  One day p.w. at the Glebe Campus (in the Sydney CBD) and the second day at the Norwest Campus (in the Hills area). This position could suit one person at both locations or two persons, one at each location.  Parking is available at both campuses.

The majority of Bedford students are recent school leavers (16-18 years old); and it is therefore necessary that the Chaplain has a demonstrated ability to work with young people from a variety of cultures, religions and beliefs.  An ability to demonstrate inclusive practices for all individuals is mandatory.

The Chaplain will work with students and staff in order to ‘introduce’ them to the Christian faith in a non-threatening manner – in the understanding that not all staff and students have a Christian faith and some have other faiths, beliefs and cultures.

Key responbsibilities:
• To provide spiritual encouragement and support to students
• To be a positive role model as a Christian working in a professional capacity
• Make contact with new students and have contact with all students
• Provide a referral service to counselling and other support services as appropriate.  This may include referral to clergy of a preferred denomination or faith
• Maintain confidentiality in all chaplaincy work subject to request requirements
• Maintain appropriate documentation to support the chaplaincy role and reporting function (subject to regulatory requirements around privacy)
• Participate in special college activities and events as appropriate
• Promote awareness and forge links with leaders, pastors and churches primarily within the Assembly of Baptist Churches but also other relevant Christian organisations
• Keynote speaker at end-of-year Graduation Ceremony
• Provision of a high quality professional pastoral care service as measured by performance appraisal (conducted by the CEO) and feedback by staff and students
• Participation in College’ activities when available
• Assistance with general administrative tasks when possible/available

Essential Criteria
• Chaplaincy qualification or currently studying a theological course is desirable
• Understanding of the spiritual and emotional needs of students
• Experience in pastoral care (specifically in working with young people (16-18 years)
• Write the Bedford College editorial for publication in Together magazine
• Involvement on behalf of Bedford College at the Revive Conference (liaison with organisers and possible attendance)

Skills and attributes
• Ability to relate to people with empathy and compassion.
• High level communication, negotiation and liaison skills.
• Problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
• Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
• Satisfactory completion of a working with children check
• Active Christian faith, church involvement and support for the Christian ethos and values of the College
• Ability to work with and respect the beliefs of non-Christian students & teachers
• Ability to enhance and respect inclusiveness for all – religions, cultures, beliefs,  backgrounds
• Ability and willingness to share Bedford College with friends and colleagues in order to ‘market’ the College
